Demand
Sportinnovator's request was to improve the understanding of site management: to gain faster and easier insight into the use of public space for sporting purposes, to improve its use, and to further encourage sporting activities.
To gain insight, workers had to patrol and count people in public spaces. This is labor- and cost-intensive and thus not very efficient. The situation had potential for application of smart technology.
The process
The goal of this project was to make data on sports use of public space insightful in a privacy-proof, sustainable and non-invasive way. Datacadabra developed a prototype for detecting and classifying audio data using a microphone in a birdhouse. This prototype was named Luistervinq.
Data
The audio data is acquired using microphones located in a birdhouse. An embedded audio classification algorithm recognizes the sound of the sporting activity, such as running, based on frequency patterns.
Services
The obtained audio data is automatically classified. This provides insight into which activities take place in the relevant public space. Examples include walking, running, cycling and mountain biking.
Feedback
Datacadabra has developed a dashboard to display insights into the use of public space. This allows site managers to easily see what activities have taken place.
The result
Automating patrolling leads to labor savings, allowing grounds managers to focus their work more effectively. The Luistervinq allows municipalities to work with Sportinnovator to measure policy adjustments related to increasing public space.
